About Circus Camp
Since 1989 Open Hand Theater's Puppet Circus Camp has provided a creative and diverse summer program for hundreds of children from all over Central New York and beyond. Campers and graduates return year after year, because ... there is nothing else like it! Open Hand's own professional artistic staff and guest artists provide hands on experiences and a cooperative environment for children ranging in age from 8 - 14.

Last year we were conveniently located in the Valley. near Nedrow and Green Hills Farms, at Meachem Elementary School offering an ideal space for rehearsals, creative theatrics and performances indoors and outside.

Past Circus Performances
Open Hand Theater's Puppet Circus has delighted thousands of audience members, young and old, over the years in many locations: in camp productions at HW Smith, Ed Smith, LaFayette Grimshaw and the Onondaga Nation Schools, and in public performances at Thornden Park Amphitheater, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Candlelight Theater at Armory Square, the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival in Jamestown, NY, the Niagara Falls Arts Festival, and Open Hand Theater's own International Arts and Puppet Festival on North Salina Street.

Martha's Circus Letter

       Martha & Allison in 1999
I spend July of each summer inside lions. Or elephants. Or zebras. Or maybe even dragons. While there is still dew on the ground, I begin to improvise, to dance, and to create paper maché masks and puppets. Sometimes I work until dusk.
Even during the hottest times of the day, we run in patterns holding brightly colored flags, strap our calves to two by fours and rise several feet above the ground on stilts in school gyms built before air conditioning.
For two weeks we work together to produce a circus. It is exhausting and my pay is nonexistent, but I return day after day, summer after summer, to the creative professionals who find the perfect role for every child.
I am not so different from the eight-year-old campers. I am valued for what I offer the theater and am unconditionally accepted as part of its family. As I graduate, I am grateful to Open Hand Theater for nurturing my creative and personal spirit and teaching me to look for the spark in everyone.
